Reminiscence Theatre
This project proposes a “Scripted Role-Play Memory House” designed specifically for elderly individuals living alone in rural villages. Inspired by the Hogeweyk dementia village and senior reality shows, and drawing on the theater’s role in connecting memories, the design reimagines this interactive storytelling format as a tool for fostering social connection, emotional engagement, and memory stimulation among older adults. Unlike youth-oriented versions, this space will use familiar cultural narratives and historical village stories as the basis for the scripts, allowing elders to participate in immersive role-play experiences that resonate with their life memories.
Set within a repurposed rural building, the project integrates scenographic design, soundscapes, and guided narration to support sensory and emotional immersion. It not only addresses rural isolation and memory loss but also reframes aging as an active, participatory stage of life. Through spatial storytelling and social interaction, the experience house serves as both a community gathering point and a “stage” where the elderly can perform, remember, and reconnect.
This project explores how design can combine play, memory, and social care to enhance well-being and combat loneliness in aging communities.
