Zhenyu Zhang (Rick)

(He/Him)

This body of work continues the artist’s ongoing exploration of black holes, cosmic horror, and the philosophy of cosmic pessimism. Through a series of sculptures, installations, and abstract paintings, the artist translates the invisible dimensions of the universe into tangible spatial experiences.

Sharp metal constructions, suspended forms, and dynamic elements build an atmosphere charged with danger, uncertainty, and transcendence. The project engages in dialogue with contemporary debates on nihilism, contingency, and critiques of anthropocentrism. Conceived as a threshold field, the exhibition space invites viewers to encounter a gaze from deep space—an imagined gravitational pull that reflects both the unfathomable mystery of the cosmos and the precarious fragility of human existence within it.

COSMIC ABYSS

My practice centers on the themes of black holes and cosmic horror, exploring humanity’s position and perceptual limits within the universe. Through sculptures, installations, and paintings, I employ sharp metallic forms and unstable structures to evoke both danger and uncertainty, while probing the tension between order and chaos, the finite and the infinite. Engaging with ideas of nihilism, contingency, and posthuman perspectives, my work seeks to create an artistic encounter with the indifference and unfathomable depths of the cosmos.
