Sojeong Choi
Sojeong Choi is a multidisciplinary artist originally from South Korea, now based in Glasgow. Her work draws from fragments of everyday life—she explores translation, invisible dialogue, and the small errors and misunderstandings that shape communication. With quiet attention to detail and a deep sense of nostalgia, she traces what is easily missed or forgotten.
Her practice is grounded in various media—from collage and photography to video, text, and found materials—which she uses as tools for layered, tactile storytelling. Alongside her artistic work, she is also a skilled art director, crafting compelling visual narratives across disciplines and contexts.
Yearning For Something That Never Belonged To Me
This work presents ninety-two paired photographic fragments transferred onto diverse surfaces such as ceramic, wood, and fabric. Each pair is accompanied by a short text functioning as a title, opening a space between memory, materiality, and narrative. The transferred images—faded, fractured, or stretched by their substrates—resist coherence and instead evoke an ambiguous sense of nostalgia for experiences that were never directly lived. While the paired images often appear unrelated, they trigger one another’s moments, producing unexpected narratives in the gaps between them. By fragmenting and recombining personal archives with found photographs, the work foregrounds memory’s fragility and its power to reverberate across personal and shared experience.

Lost In Translation
This video essay explores the fragility of language through multilingual dialogues conducted in non-native tongues. Despite the use of advanced translation tools, small errors, omissions, and misunderstandings continually arise, creating subtle gaps where meaning slips and new possibilities emerge. These fragmented conversations—drawn from exchanges with collaborators of different cultural and linguistic backgrounds—reveal the limits of communication while affirming its generative potential. By layering voices, subtitles, and visual fragments, the work reflects on the incompleteness of translation and the affective space that opens up between authenticity and misinterpretation.
