This picture book uses the trope of a child’s fear of monsters to reflect anxieties from “insecure” parent-child relationships. The story revolves around Jack’s journey to find his mother, during which he encounters three monsters: the Big Bad Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz, and the Beauty Snake from Dawn Blossoms Plucked at Dusk.
