MLitt Fine Art Practice School of Fine Art

James Dewhirst

I’m an artist based in Glasgow, and my practice explores photography, sculpture, and installation. I am interested in the shifting materiality of the image and the threshold between stability and collapse in photographic representation. My work often fragments and reconfigures the photographic surface, extending it into physical space where it operates less as a document and rather as an object in dialogue with its surroundings. Through processes of abstraction, cropping, and recontextualisation, I aim to examine photographs as artefacts and a system of representation in a rapidly shifting visual landscape.

Under a Veiled Sky

Under a Veiled Sky

Under a Veiled Sky casts photographic and sculptural works into a scattered constellation, fragmented materials become relics of an Industrial Age already passing us by. The photograph is active, extending into the space, away from the walls and up from the floor; it becomes a participant, rather than a window onto the world.

The title alludes towards a veil of uncertainty, to where these images begin, and what might lie beyond them. Here, photography is framed with a self-consciousness; the image gestures towards its materiality, questioning how we interact with a shifting image landscape.
