First Touches into Belonging

Transformation Design Research for Community Organisations as Integration Anchors for Newly Arrived Refugees in Glasgow

In close collaboration with Adelaide Place, a church and charity in Glasgow city centre, this transformation design research project explores how community organisations can enhance “first-touch” experiences, to shape newcomers’ sense of safety, welcome and belonging, by celebrating the community’s connections and heritage in the future refugee integration practices.

Using participatory design and object-based storytelling methods, the project tests and delivers a set of community engagement prototypes alongside a user experience design proposal on information navigation during the refugees’ arrival stage, ultimately supporting community organisations and the integration aims of the New Scots Strategy.

Governance Transformation towards Restorative Gen-AI Systems

Through the lens of Governance, we’ve explored the future transformation of how Generative AI (Gen-AI) users can understand and become more aware of the short-and-longer-term environmental impacts of Gen-AI to shape responsible behaviours. We’ve understood Governance as a set of practices that involve diverse actors—including communities and individuals—in decision-making. Through a range of practices, people can participate in shaping public policies and future regulation, to make Gen-AI more trustworthy, ethical, and inclusive.

However, Governance can be a concept hard to grasp and materialise, so through the project we’ve created a Ladder of Awareness for Gen-AI’s Governance. Its goal is to demonstrate the importance of acquiring transparent and accessible Gen-AI knowledge (AI Literacy) as an initial step, to then empower diverse and multiple communities to participate in the regulation and governance of it.

To make this Ladder of Awareness tangible, we’ve created a deliberation and decision-making tool to engage with multiple and diverse actors regardless of their background. The tool allows participants to position themselves in various scales regarding the topic. Ultimately, our goal is to spark reflection and conversation around individuals, companies and government behaviours in relation to Gen-AI’s future governance and regulations.
