Empathy-Driven Serious Board Game Design: A Case Study of Social Prism

Empathy-Driven Serious Board Game Design: A Case Study of Social Prism

Hello, I’m Chenhui Gu,  I’ve created a board game for my graduation project. My project responds to this need by designing a serious board game called “Social Prism”, which simulates real-world resource allocation scenarios to cultivate players’ empathy and understanding of social inequality.

Structural inequalities in resource distribution have become increasingly pronounced, making it a pressing educational goal to foster empathetic understanding of these issues. In the board game Social Prism, players assume four distinct social roles – a Doctor, an Engineer, a Delivery courier, and a Single Parent – each experiencing unique resource limitations and life challenges. This “empathy-driven” approach lets players figuratively walk a mile in someone else’s shoes, prompting perspective-taking and reflection on real social problems. Our core research question asks: can a carefully designed game experience effectively stimulate players’ cognitive and emotional empathy and deepen their understanding of structural social issues?
