MLitt Fine Art Practice School of Fine Art

Xing Gao

Xing Gao (b. 2000, Henan, China) is currently studying at The Glasgow School of Art, after completing a BA in Experimental Art at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts.

My practice explores how art works between individuality, empathy, and the complexity of human experience. The ways I paint, and the materials I choose, are also tied to how different cultures hold meaning. I’m especially interested in the push and pull between Chinese traditions—calligraphy, ink, the aesthetics of negative space—and ideas from Western modern and contemporary art. These influences run deep for me, and I try to bring them together through abstraction, as a way of reflecting on inner life within diverse cultural and social settings.

Miraculous Hours

Miraculous Hours

Miraculous Hours takes its title from Mark Strand’s poem In Celebration. Built on extensive experiments with painterly methods and cross-medium sampling, the series evolves through an open, intuitive process—where the canvas is guided by instinct and emotion, and where fluid, chaotic gestures lead the direction of the work. Yet, its final state is ultimately shaped by cycles of destruction and growth. In practice, I often merge acrylics with water and spray paint, sometimes washing, layering, or even erasing entire surfaces, while moving constantly along the edges of the canvas to test when form and feeling fall into resonance.

I think of the interplay of color, composition, and symbolic gestures on canvas as a counterpart to lived experience: how people connect, how individuals navigate different cultural and social contexts. These works emerge on the verge of collapse and reconstruction, between loss of control and the unknown, across shifting perspectives in time. They are, for me, moments of fragile wonder—miraculous hours suspended between breaking and becoming.
