‘are you happy with it? i want you to be happy. like is it what you pictured?’ you say when you send me your half of this statement. But everything I’ve asked you to do for this project, you’ve done exactly how I would if I’d only thought of it.

When I was looking for images to accompany the descriptions of our proposed perfect days, I already had them all. If I needed a reason to film everything, perhaps that’s it: to catalogue perfection you don’t even know is there. A body of water, a shared meal in two different cities, sliced nectarines, a tree shaped like a duck, a home video. You’re in all my favourite things.

Also, I think the mouse is really gone this time, so you can come visit again soon.

We talk about Elizabeth Gaskell so much (or talk about me talking about Elizabeth Gaskell), that she’s made it into your work too. I think that’s yet more evidence that we’re essentially the same person.

You know how one of these questions was about whether art was still worthwhile if it was only for one other person? You sent me a part of your essay that said ‘it’s really only for my sister anyway’. So even though these words are written out neatly on a fancy website, I guess it might be only you and I who will ever read them.

It’s fun to be both creator and audience. Maybe we always have been both of those things anyway, because everything I make or write is partly yours. Even the things dedicated to Elizabeth Gaskell.
