Modern Gothic reimagines six classic works of 18th-century Gothic literature as a cohesive series of contemporary book covers. The goal was to capture the atmosphere, tension, and visual drama of Gothic fiction in a way that feels fresh and relevant, while still honoring the tradition it comes from. The project grew out of in-depth research into both Gothic literature and the history of book cover design. I wanted to understand not only the themes and symbolism of these novels, but also how book design has evolved and how past and present approaches can speak to each other. A big part of this work was exploring craft alongside technology. Using letterpress and Risograph printing brought texture, weight, and a tactile quality that digital tools can’t replicate. At the same time, working digitally gave me the precision and flexibility to keep the series consistent. Together, these methods created a dialogue between old and new, showing how traditional techniques and modern design can meet in the same space. The finished covers share a clear typographic design and layout system that unifies the series while allowing each novel to stand on its own. They reflect the depth, darkness, and strange beauty that embodies the essence of Gothic literature, presenting these classic stories in a form that feels accessible to today’s readers. In this series I have created a set of 6 fully designed book jackets to accompany each cover. These are shown in digital mockups and physical versions with the printed dust jackets attached to the interior pages of each novel. Also in this series, are Risograph prints of each book cover.
