Eve Chen
Eve Chen, (b.2000) was born in Shanghai, China, currently works between SH, Glasgow and London. Her current practices are mainly based on creative writing to produce images and theatre experiments, paintings, and installations, discussing the boundaries between fiction and nonfiction around the proximity of her own life, in recent practice, she uses a low-tech approach to reproduce the coupling in the image production process through multimedia; exploring identity politics, visual culture. Most of her experimental theater survives temporarily in the field and remains in video archives.
She graduated from Glasgow School of Art, M.Litt Fine Art Practice Photography and Moving Image and owns an Excellent Graduate of Shanghai City Award from her B.A. in Shanghai Institute of Visual Art, Public Art.
The two moving images I made recently focus on the camera following a woman as she wanders through the streets. I suddenly realized that “walking” is so important to me. Sometimes she has no destination, and sometimes she simply roams around her home. Sometimes this woman is myself, sometimes my mother, and sometimes someone else. It doesn’t really matter. I want to portray this outside of traditional narrative structures. Sometimes a woman doesn’t need to do anything in the film—she just walks, and random thoughts and events happen. She is the protagonist in my view, while the rest of the pedestrians on the street fade into the background.
I am tired of creating or inventing new visual styles. I always feel that this is driven by strong personal will or just a ‘little cleverness’ meant to advance a particular medium.
DIAPHRAGM 隔膜
16:9 Dual-Screen Short Film, 33’47’’, 2024
DIAPHRAGM 隔膜 is a dual-screen autofictional short film that explores queer post-colonial narratives through two different types of individual representation of young Asian women as an object. She wanders as a performer in front of the camera, navigating urban-like theater spaces and daily life, sharing her “own” perceptions and memories of identity, language, and images in a modern city (Glasgow). Her representations are constantly altered by the influence of “the other” off-screen or by her own commentary.
In the second video, I use double-layer transparent projection film suspended in the air to create a physical superimposition effect. The images become slightly distorted as they shift and move with the subtle twists in the plastic sheets. My image as the “director” is sometimes reflected in a cinematic moving image, slowly drifting. Wearing the same makeup as the actress, I sit in front of the camera and read the script before she speaks. Our voices collide throughout the exhibition space, sometimes to the point of annoyance. I attempt to create a space—a channel for dialogue between images—a practice that challenges the stereotype viewing experience. I do not seek to please my audience.
