MDes Interior Design School of Design

Yuxuan Luo

(He/Him)

After completing an undergraduate course at the School of Architecture at Nottingham Trent University, I furthered my postgraduate degree in Interior Design, during which I completed research projects focusing on the adaptive re-use of heritage. In this project, my design philosophy was heavily inspired by Alain de Botton’s theory of The Architecture of Happiness, which suggests that a building’s interior space is not only an expression of its physical environment, but also a source of happiness. By combining the macroscopic perspective of architecture with the delicate care of interior design, I endeavour to create spaces that both respect the historical lineage and meet modern functional needs.

In my practice, I focus on the organic integration of humanistic factors and the process of urbanisation, and strive to give new life to historic buildings through their preservation and reuse. I am actively involved in a number of interdisciplinary collaborative projects that emphasise not only the social responsibility of design, but also the cultural legacy of design as a means of creating liveable and sustainable urban environments. I firmly believe that through innovative design, we can enhance the well-being and sense of belonging of our residents and create lasting value for society.

Cultural Confluence: An Inclusive Community Hub

Cultural Confluence: An Inclusive Community Hub

This project was inspired by the increasing pressure on infrastructure and social services from Scotland’s growing new Scottish population now and in the future.

My aim is to explore how historic heritage resources can be transformed into multi-functional spaces that not only protect cultural values but also meet the needs of modern cities for sustainable development, especially in the context of urban regeneration due to the influx of immigrants.

In this project, I am committed to creating an inclusive and culturally diverse community center space with an immigrant-friendly design as the core concept, incorporating Chinese cultural characteristics and open to all. Our goal is to create a warm and creative environment that makes everyone who comes here feel a sense of belonging and inspiration.

The community centre will contain coffee Spaces, co-working Spaces and art studios, and is intended to be a multi-purpose place to promote exchange and collaboration. This art studio aims to bring community members together through a variety of artistic activities to inspire creativity and collaboration. In the co-working space, we specially create an exclusive activity and exhibition area for artists, providing a stage to display their works and ideas, and also providing support for their creation and work.
