Mood Unspoken
My design practice is rooted in cultural awareness, supported by research into historical context and contemporary relevance. I prioritise respect for cultural communities, avoiding appropriation while translating traditional garment craftsmanship into contemporary design to sustain and revitalise heritage. This project is inspired by Maggie Cheung’s role in In the Mood for Love. It draws on Jean‑François Lepage’s visual language, the qipao’s structure, and the form of a vintage lampshade. Cinematic imagery informs atmospheric palettes and emotional distance, while minimalist composition, cool-toned light, and shadow support a collage-based process of fragmentation and reconstruction, producing contemporary qipao interpretations that merge Eastern subtlety with surreal, abstracted, modern form.
