Paper is compelling as it has two sides and can be both fragile and strong. My project came about by experimenting with the infinite possibilities of pieces of 15 cm x 15 cm squares of plain white paper.
I responded to words such as layering, pleating, creasing, crumpling, wrinkling, folding, contorting, overlapping, turning over, turning under and manipulation as I aimed to alter the feel, finish and appearance of the paper.
I tried different opacities and thicknesses and experimented with different ways of increasing and decreasing surface areas.
I translated this approach to squares of zero-waste white fabric to create looks of different densities and volumes.

Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by Chinese horror elements, especially paper figures. Paper man, and everything made of paper, are the equivalent of the vehicle that connects yin and yang in funerals, and also conveys the miss and love of the living for the departed.
Therefore, I made a paper man and intend to start with it and research paper. Paper is a very peculiar thing, he is very fragile, once torn, but paper is also very sharp, as long as you are not careful it will cut your hand. Paper has its own unique texture and infinite possibilities.
The project began to study with the paper. Firstly, I am going to study a 15*15cm piece of paper and randomly knead the paper to create different folds, and then I will take photographs and make sketches to compare the differences between the different folds. Besides,I also learned about paper craft, making paper man out of paper, and studied the way that paper changed during the process and how it was used in the process. The images are then put together and compared to create different effects with paper on the mannequin , similar to stacking paper and rolling paper into rolls, experimenting and developing on the table and taking photographs to record. Inspired by these processes and performance, I started to investigate the random folds and shapes that paper creates in different situations and how this affects the overall outfit.
The purpose of researching paper because I think life is just a thin piece of paper. Life and Death, Love and Hate, Expensive and Cheap, Honour and Disgrace, Is and Is not, Black and White ,True and False , Pain and Joy , Gain and Loss. Good and Bad, Blessing and Calamity. It’s front and back of the paper. The things we come through is the different wrinkles of the paper. The support of life is also the different wrinkles.Things change, life is fragile.Don’t take things too seriously.
