Xinyi He

I am passionate about beyond human-centered design, championing social justice, and advocating for non-human ethics. My work transcends traditional boundaries, integrating different design tools to address complex societal challenges from multiple perspectives.

I specialize in creating designs that consider the needs of both human and non-human entities, developing innovative, inclusive designs that promote sustainable and ethical responsibility. I believe design can drive meaningful and powerful social change.

My project emphasizes the ethical treatment of all actors, human and non-human. I strive to design solutions that respect and protect the well-being of humans, ecosystems, and other non-human entities, fostering a more harmonious coexistence.

Earthlings: Moss In The City

Earthlings: Moss In The City

This project explores the hidden value and significance of often-overlooked mosses, expanding our understanding beyond human citizens to reimagine that we are all earthlings—citizens of the Earth. By designing an interactive experience between the audience and mosses, the project uses moss as a material symbolic medium to bridge humans and nonhumans, passing the posthumanism thinking behind the project and helping people understand what earthlings mean.

The project creates an opportunity to allow the audiences to experience close interaction with mosses. It aims to provoke audiences to think and have conversations about the relationship between humans and moss through multi-sensory experiences of sight, smell, hearing, and touch. It encourages people to appreciate and care about the urban mosses and other nonhumans, see their values, and recognize the interconnectedness and intimacy with nonhuman entities in our shared urban environment.
