Without Expectation
Without Expectation: From Isolation to Belonging explores how interior design can reduce the social pressure of being seen, judged, or expected to interact. Responding to urban loneliness and the changing role of third spaces, the project questions whether people can begin to feel connected without being required to speak, perform, or participate immediately.
Situated within The Pyramid at Anderston in Glasgow, the proposal uses temporary anonymity, sound, touch, shadow, and controlled visibility to create a gradual journey from isolation towards shared presence. Users can hear, sense, and recognize others before choosing whether to become visible, allowing interaction to happen at their own pace.
Developed through sensory ethnography, human experiments, and Research through Design, the project proposes “gradual co-presence” as a spatial strategy for creating low-pressure environments where belonging can emerge through choice rather than expectation
