The tenement circular bridge: A doorstep collection service for electronic appliances

In Glasgow tenements, small household electricals like kettles, lamps and hair dryers etc, are often stored or thrown away when they break, not because residents don’t care, but because repair, sharing and recycling routes are too expensive, confusing and hard to reach for just one everyday item. To address this, I designed a digital platform and circular service that sit between the home and existing repair cafés, appliance libraries, council services and delivery networks, creating a single, intuitive route from “something just broke” to a clear next step. Through the website, tenants can describe the broken appliance, receive simple guidance on whether repair, sharing, donation or recycling is most appropriate, see nearby options, and book an affordable single-item doorstep collection with live tracking. By removing cost, transport and information barriers, the design turns a high-friction, disposal-led journey into a convenient, trusted and more dignified circular system that keeps useful objects in circulation for longer.
