Sonic Perfumery: Designing Memory Through Sound

Sonic Perfumery explores how sound can behave like perfume — appearing, transforming, fading and lingering through time.

Rooted in my experience of living in Glasgow, the project uses field recordings of traffic, wind, footsteps, public transport, distant voices and everyday environments as raw sonic material. Through layering, spatialisation, granular processing and abstraction, familiar sounds gradually move between recognition and ambiguity.

Inspired by the structure of fragrance, the works unfold through Top, Heart and Base Notes, moving from immediate sensation towards familiarity, memory and lingering traces.

Rather than using moving image to provide a fixed interpretation of sound, the project creates an open sensory space in which sound and image continually influence one another. Each listener is invited to form their own memories, emotions and associations.

Sound does not describe memory. It leaves a trace of it.

Sonic Perfumery — Audiovisual Installation

The final audiovisual work combines sound design, generative visuals and hand-tracking interaction. Rather than illustrating sound directly, the moving image responds through particles, traces and gradual transformations, creating an open sensory space for listening.
