Inspired by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, my collection explores the contrast between humanity and mechanisation through the two Marias. This duality is reflected in post-war womenswear, comparing Dior’s structured New Look with Balenciaga’s anti-fit sack dress.
Through draping, I combine restrictive and liberated silhouettes to create new forms. Abstract pattern shapes developed from the two Marias generates experimental structures. Grid-like windows in Metropolis inspired the use of plaid fabrics, while photographs of Glasgow’s architecture informed the colour palette. Second-hand shirts are incorporated to reduce material waste.
