Manufactured Identities

2026

Oil on canvas

60 × 80 cm

This work stems from observations of customers in cafés and explores identity as an evolving social construct. Desire, status, and a sense of belonging prompt individuals to adjust and reshape themselves in order to integrate into social groups, navigate them with ease, and gain recognition.

Oil painting titled *Manufactured Identities* (2026) by Cong Chen. Several distorted human faces and bodies overlap and merge into a single crowded figure, painted in vivid purple, yellow, green, orange and blue. The fragmented profiles face different directions, suggesting multiple identities occupying the same social space. A small cup rests on a table at the bottom, referencing the café setting that inspired the work and its exploration of identity, belonging and social conformity.
