Home is not a House

My research goal is to establish temporary housing in a limited environment and create an ideal future lifestyle. The project is based on the Australian wildfire event and its impact on residents. After gaining a deeper understanding of Australia’s climate and the flammable eucalyptus forests, I realized that fires in the region are inevitable every summer. My research question is, ‘How do we establish shelters to meet residents’ basic living and housing needs in areas with frequent wildfires in Australia during the fire season?’. More than firefighting measures are needed to cope with these unpredictable natural disasters. Therefore, finding a new way to help residents evacuate when danger arises is essential.

My project was inspired by Reyner Banham’s viewpoint that ‘A Home is not a House’, which subverted my understanding of traditional forms of housing and led to research on related cases. It also gave me a new perspective on shelter and home.

Through a literature review, I will reflect on the concepts of ‘home’ and ‘shelter’ and their relevance. Create a new way of life by adapting to local conditions and utilizing natural resources to achieve self-sufficiency. The design goal is ultimately achieved by establishing a foldable modular mobile housing system.
