Ruijie Zhang

As a designer with a background in product design, I have always been deeply interested in the intersection of cultural heritage and contemporary design. Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have continuously explored ways to integrate traditional Chinese aesthetics and cultural elements into modern products. And in the practice of brand design, I began to view cultural symbols as powerful tools for fostering cross-cultural dialogue and mutual understanding.

My recent project, “Bridging Cultures: Chinese Festival Patterns in Scotland,” represents my commitment to fostering cross-cultural dialogue and understanding through innovative design. This project marks a significant evolution in my design approach, as it not only preserves traditional cultural elements but also encourages active participation and learning. I hope that through this work, I can contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture within a diverse and globalized context.

Bridging Cultures: Chinese Festival Patterns in Scotland

In an effort to promote cultural exchange and deepen understanding of Chinese traditions in Scotland, the project has designed an interactive pop-up book showing the patterns and significance of some Chinese traditional festivals in the Scottish Highlands and Moray, which will be exhibited at the Eco Cafe of the Scottish Highlands & Islands and Moray Chinese Association.

The pop-up book serves not only as an educational tool but also as a medium for cultural immersion. Through dynamic, threedimensional elements, users can engage with festive patterns that have adorned Chinese costumes and ceramics for centuries. By flipping through the pages and interacting with the designs, participants are encouraged to reflect on the beauty and significance of these patterns, fostering a greater interest in Chinese cultural heritage. This project offers a creative and accessible way to bridge cultural gaps and promote appreciation of Chinese traditions within the Scottish community.
