I am an innovative citizen designer from China, currently pursuing design innovation and citizen design practice at GSA. My master’s program explores how to redesign environments to strengthen the boundaries between people, thereby enhancing the peaceful experience of collective environmental living in public spaces.
From Noise to Quiet: experience of peaceful moments in public spaces
My project explores the use of quietness as an auxiliary function of public spaces in the urban environment of Glasgow, and carries out exploratory spatial ‘redesign’ with the participation of young residents to enhance the experience of peaceful moments.
Which quiet spaces in the city can provide you with an environment to enjoy peaceful moments?
How to achieve a relatively quiet state from a noisy environment?
This project adopted various qualitative research methods, including semi formal interviews, participatory observation, cultural exploration, etc., which provided the project with assistance from multiple perspectives and resources during the research stage where the focus was constantly changing.
In the field investigation, non participatory observation and interviews with community space managers provided an overview analysis for the research of the project. Through extensive interviews, it was found that residents have varying degrees of demand for quiet spaces. On this basis, further investigation was conducted to address the urgent growing needs of the young population and to promote the further development of the project.
This project has created an online website that allows users to customize and generate personalized table mats. Personalized table mats help participants easily build personal spaces in public areas, using visible visual objects to reinforce psychological boundaries, enhance their comfort and sense of security. This helps young residents enjoy tranquility in public spaces in the city.
