Kefei Dong

(She/ Her)

As an artist and student with years of practice in traditional Chinese painting, particularly landscape painting on paper and silk, Kefei has embarked on various explorations throughout her undergraduate and graduate studies. Whether creating large-scale black-and-white abstract forms or delicate color representations in long scrolls, her artistic endeavors have been diverse and inclusive. Her creative themes span from religion and current events to exotic cultures, reflecting a wide range of subjects in her artworks.

Since joining the Glasgow School of Art, she has developed a strong interest in the local culture and customs. This cultural atmosphere has fused with her artistic expression, inspiring Kefei to explore printmaking techniques. She has begun to study lithography, creating works that embody a distinctive Chinese painting professional touch.

Has man a future?

In “Has Man a Future,” through the lens of Chinese landscape painting, one catches a glimpse of Eden’s world filled with love and the apocalyptic vision of the Last Judgment, as if the biblical stories of the past are being rewritten. It reflects the collision of Eastern and Western philosophies within the realm of thought.

With its anti-war theme, this artwork adopts the triptych structure reminiscent of “The Garden of Earthly Delights. ” The left and right panels are intentionally asymmetrical and disjointed: the left side is lush and vibrant, evoking a futuristic utopia, while the right is desolate, depicting a post-war wasteland. The central panel serves as a stark warning, highlighting the grave dangers of yielding to temptation and urging the viewer to remain vigilant.

The Babel Project

This work’s original version is a 1.8x3m rice paper artwork. I photographed the original and then recreated it by lithography, continually giving the Tower of Babel theme a new appearance, further elevating the concept of utopia.
