Hermaphroditus

Hermaphroditus

Hermaphroditus is a Greek god of the yin and yang, the son of Hermes and Aphrodite. His name is a combination of his parents’ names. Hermaphroditus is usually depicted as a young girl with male genitalia. His name is also the source of the Western word “androgynous”.

On the one hand, I hope that through the display of my work, when the public talks about intersex people, they will first and foremost focus not on their reproductive system, but on their innate androgynous nature, and the advantages of a perfect blend of male and female temperaments. The public is called upon to affirm their identity, reduce or eliminate prejudice and discrimination against this group, and give them more respect.

On the other hand, in real life, although my social gender is cis straight male, I have quite a few queer friends. Even as a cisgender man, I have been oppressed by traditional patriarchal society to varying degrees, just like the queer people. Through my work, I hope to give a voice to minorities and call for a resistance to the oppression of patriarchal society.

My entire body of work is to consist of three groups of works. They are a tattoo style drawing with figurative and literary attributes; a pair of sculptures with semi-abstract and visual symbolic attributes; and another set of sculptures with abstract and sensory attributes. I try to celebrate the strengths of the androgynous character of the intersex community from six different creative dimensions.
