Stage 3- Sensory Healing Space

Stage 1 Slice- Archival

This project aims to transform the famous old retail shop- Watt Brothers- into an archival space serving Glasgow’s old cinema cultural preservation spot. I designed a space using a movie projector as a key concept to create a feeling of stepping back in time. The design incorporates materials and colours generally found in early cinema spaces and Watt Brothers stores. Using metal sheets also increases reflection and creates a sense of expansion inside the space.

concept

Therefore, by searching for this period of gradually forgotten historical memory (intangible), using the cinema as the central axis of the space (tangible), and then collecting different movies and posters, etc.(object), and combining with the cafe and bar to make this multi-functional area open to people to gather and conversation, day or night, so that this place can become more stories and memories of the archives.

Stage 2 Host- Story Conveyor

My project started with the trailer, in which I found some negative current situations and the function of an advertisement. This trailer tried to communicate with the public, but sadly, no one came close to it. Therefore, I thought maybe I could transform this abandoned trailer into a new host that gathers people together and creates a relationship between the trailer and humankind. Through a series of studies about objects, people, memories, and public participation, exploring different potentials in different realms for building interaction. I found that objects can somehow create a link in memories or emotions with people, which can relate to material culture.

In order to better visualise this interactive relationship, I chose ‘book’ as my object to develop my thoughts. With some background research, I found that children’s and teenagers’ reading habits are declining, and some public libraries are shutting down year after year. As a result, I wonder if I can use this trailer as an installation to bring books close to the public and serve as an advertising tool to promote reading habits and a means of building relationships within the community.

Concept

My main attempt is to enhance the ties/ symbiosis between the trailer(object) and people, even society. This idea represents an interpretation of the role of the 'Host', who will serve as the facilitator of events and as a catalyst for community integration and interaction.

Stage 3 -Sensory Healing Space

The scent is omnipresent but often overlooked. This study explores the important role of olfaction in daily life, particularly its potential to evoke memories and facilitate communication. By delving into the influence of scent, the aim is to integrate scent into spatial design to promote physical and mental healing. With the growing concern over mental health issues, I propose a conceptual installation that provides a brief moment of relaxation for people in bustling cities, enhancing their overall well-being. Through case studies and experimental design in my methodology, this study investigates how scent is linked to memory. Finally, I chose the city of Glasgow as my design site for transforming abandoned phone booths into an immersive space that enhances well-being and serves as archives of memories. The results of this study will provide new perspectives on the use of olfaction in spatial design and offer a model for the reuse of vacant spaces in the city.

Scent X Memory

In this project, I aim to explore the connection and role of human olfaction in daily perception and memories. Specifically, I will explore how scent affects people's experience of spaces and how artists incorporate smells in their designs to examine the influence of olfaction in daily life. Finally, the research will propose a new spatial concept model to show the potential of using scent in space. Introducing these scent installations with relaxing and stress-relieving functions relieves the fatigue of a busy life and a moment of peace.

Methodology

Concept

These phone booths were once essential places for people to communicate and connect, representing a particular era's lifestyle and cultural symbols. By preserving and transforming these phone booths, the project protects their physical existence and reinvents their role in contemporary urban life, becoming an activator of communal memory.

Unit Plan

By scanning the QR code on the seat with your mobile phone, you can not only leave your memories and feelings, but I also plan to put this city map on the page. It's a way for people to visit the city's relaxing corners and experience the different smells.
