Haipeng Zhu
Haipeng Zhu is an interdisciplinary curator and theatre producer currently studying for an MA in Curatorial Practice at Glasgow School of Art (GSA). He received his Bachelor’s degree from the Central Academy of Drama in China, where his educational background provided him with a solid theoretical foundation. Haipeng’s work is not limited to curating; he also has extensive experience in the field of theatre production. In his practice, he creates unique forms of artistic expression through the combination of the narrative logic of theatre and art curation.
In the academic field, Haipeng is committed to ethnographic art research and interdisciplinary identity studies. In his practice, he tries to understand and explore the connection between different art forms and cultural contexts, experimenting with the narrative logic of theatre and curation. From an ethnographic perspective, Haipeng digs deeper into the cultural roots and social connotations behind the artworks, so that the audience can appreciate the art and at the same time gain a deeper understanding of the culture and emotions conveyed by the works.
In this exhibition project, Haipeng juxtaposes different forms of artworks with multicultural backgrounds to construct an exhibition space full of narrative and interactivity. His curatorial concept emphasises the linking of artworks through narrative, so that each work is not only an independent artistic expression, but also a part of the overall narrative. In his curatorial practice, multi-sensory experience and audience interaction are the core elements, through which he makes the audience not only passive appreciators, but also active participants in the art experience.

Curatorial statement
In this exhibition, Haipeng Zhu has meticulously crafted a narrative-driven space, where art becomes more than a visual experience—it transforms into a profound journey of thought and reflection. Haipeng believes that art should engage multiple senses and provoke deeper contemplation. By carefully designing the exhibition environment, he aims to offer visitors an immersive experience, one that allows them to connect with the underlying stories and cultural contexts embedded in each piece.
Haipeng’s approach involves juxtaposing artworks from diverse forms and cultural backgrounds, creating a multidisciplinary space rich with narrative potential. In this environment, each artwork is not merely an isolated piece but a vital part of a broader, cohesive story. As visitors navigate through the exhibition, they encounter a harmonious interplay of visual, auditory, and tactile elements, all designed to evoke the deep emotions and concepts conveyed by the artists.
A central tenet of Haipeng’s curatorial is the significance of the audience’s experience. He understands that the success of an exhibition hinges on how effectively it engages its viewers. With this in mind, Haipeng has placed a strong emphasis on interaction and participation within the exhibition. He has incorporated several interactive elements, inviting visitors to engage actively with the artworks rather than passively observing them. Through these interactions, visitors become an integral part of the exhibition’s narrative, contributing to the unfolding story in a meaningful way.
This participatory approach not only enhances the viewers’ connection to the art but also allows them to explore the themes of the exhibition on a more personal level. Haipeng’s thoughtful curation ensures that each visitor’s journey through the space is unique, fostering a deeper understanding of the art and its cultural significance. The exhibition becomes a collaborative experience between the curator, the artists, and the audience, where each element supports and enriches the others.
