Echoes of the Sea Women
Echoes of the Sea Women is inspiration from the fading culture of Jeju Haenyeo, South Koreas traditional female free divers, exploring their dual identity as resilient ocean hunters and supportive community members. The collection contrast’s rigid structure with soft drape, combining boning and stretch mesh to form fluid silhouettes. Vintage fishhooks are repurposed to alter the silhouette, alongside references to fishing baskets and fisherwoman’s workwear details that deepen the narrative. Sustainability is central, with partial pieces made via zero waste cutting, recycled sailcloth, and second-hand fishhooks. The project honours a disappearing heritage while linking craft to contemporary fashion practice and future ready to wear, film, and installation outcomes. It celebrates resilience, unity, and environmental awareness.
