Independent Parenthood- Child Transportation for Manual Wheelchair Users

Independent Parenthood- Child Transportation for Manual Wheelchair Users

There are 20,000 manual wheelchair users in the UK who are parents. Current solutions to wheelchair users transporting infants include relying on others, attempting to push strollers while in the wheelchair, having the child sit on your lap or using a child carrier. These have problems with lack of interaction, reduced manoeuvrability, lack of comfort, restriction of parent’s movement when wheeling and safety issues.

A parent should not feel guilty, hopeless or a danger when it comes to caring for their child.

The proposed design is a product that attaches to the user’s wheelchair and supports a standard child car seat. Once secured, the parent can strap their child and transport their child, enhancing their experience as carers.

With simple attachments, lightweight materials, adjustable positions and customisable sizes for use with standard manual wheelchairs and child car seats, this solution brings independence to people who are often forgotten in design.
