Bringing butterflies and moths back to life: digitally recreating life-like poses of museum specimens

The Butterfly Image Conversion app was created to automatically re-pose museum specimens into more natural poses. Inspired by the ideas of Prof. Roderic Page of the University of Glasgow, this study was a follow-up to a previous study examining if machine learning could harness data from a DNA barcode database to improve the accuracy of species identification via machine learning. Butterfly Image Conversion sought to address some shortcomings of the approach in the original study, picking out the positioning of the wings as the variable to test.
