(She/her)

I am Himaja Machiraju, a recent graduate of the MSc in Product Design Engineering program at the Glasgow School of Art and the University of Glasgow. With a strong foundation in Electronics and Communications Engineering, I’ve always been passionate about merging technical expertise with creative design to craft solutions that address real-world challenges.

During my time at GSA, I worked on a variety of impactful projects, including my dissertation project, Protect Pal—an innovative installation designed for bus stops that helps individuals feel safe by understanding the surroundings, calling for help, and raising complaints in case of unsafe situations. This project reflects my commitment to enhancing public safety through practical and user-centered design. This experience has reinforced my dedication to using design and engineering to make a meaningful impact.

As I move forward in my career, I’m excited to continue exploring how design and engineering can come together to improve lives and push the boundaries of what’s possible.

Protect Pal

Protect Pal is designed to enhance safety and comfort at bus stops by creating the reassuring presence of a companion. It offers surveillance to deter potential threats and provides an easy way to contact volunteer organizations in emergencies, ensuring help is always within reach. Additionally, Protect Pal features interactive advertisement screens that serve as information kiosks, offering transit updates, maps, and engaging games for all ages. By combining security with practical services, Protect Pal transforms bus stops into safer, more welcoming, and community-centered spaces.
