MDes Sound for the Moving Image School of Innovation & Technology

David Dore

(He/Him)

Film and TV sound always seemed secretive, a magical art that the general viewer never quite understands. Film music in particular interested me for as long I can remember, and is one of the reasons I have a degree in music and enjoy orchestral conducting. I thought I had an idea of what Sound for the Moving Image ensued. I was wrong.

This year has taught me so much, and introduced me to so many avenues unknown 12 months ago. I tried to try as many things as possible, which the course allowed, and the work below shows. From the dive in the deepend with Clyde Built, to an ambisonic soundscape, to my final project redesigning the sound to one of my favourite movie franchises.

If you’ve got any questions, please feel free to email me, and thank you for having a glance at my page!

Reimagining the Sound of Star Wars

Flashing Images

Reimagining the Sound of Star Wars is a project designed to look back to 1977, and to create a new, but familiar sound design to three scenes from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Firstly, the sound design includes inspiration from Ben Burtt, the original sound designer of the film. My research examined his recording techniques, his experimental sound
design and his sound editing in the (then) cutting edge Dolby Stereo. My Project takes what Burtt did, and brings it into the 21st Century, implementing Dolby Atmos and modern recording and mixing technology.
Secondly, George Lucas’ original concept, which was expanded by Ralph Mcquarrie and Joe Johnston’s concept artwork and technical drawings, which both created a visual concept that allowed the production to come together, but also greatly inspired Burtt
and some of the most well known sound effects from the franchise.
And Finally John Williams’ epic musical score, and the inspiration which came from composers from the Romantic Period through to the Golden Age of Hollywood, to create a modern classic, harkening back to 19th Century Opera, set in a “galaxy far, far way”.

If the video below is not available, it is available through the link below, or will be shown as part of the Degree Show, please come along and see it.

The 20 is Stereo, which is better for speakers.

The Bin is Binaural, which is better with headphones.

Music for Picture

These 4 videos are part of the Music for Picture elective.

McClains Law, Meshes in the afternoon and Latin American Cruise 14 are part of a portfolio, showcasing different composition technique, orchestration and genre.

Rats on a Stick is based of a fiction TV show prompt, which we were tasked to compose a short, 30 second theme for.

Smugglers on the Solway Coast – Binaural Soundscape

A spart of the Ambisonics assignment, this was made for Unpath’d Waters, a national research project on maritime history and collections.

Below is my work, telling the story of Captain Jack Yawkins, the reknowned Smuggler on the Solway Coast. This is best listened to with headphones.

Persona Sound Design

Violence, Disturbing Images, Nudity, Flashing Images

This sound design for the film Persona was an oppertunity for me to get creative with sound. When creating the soundtrack I chose to not listen to the original, and instead create a dreamlike sequence, at times mimicking, and times juxtaposed to the images.
