the Metamorphosis
The inspiration for this collection comes from Kafka’s novel, ‘The Metamorphosis’.
The plot parallels contemporary Chinese life, where relentless societal pressures strip away the human essence. I applied this idea of ‘grinding away’ to recognizable garment forms and how they can lose their original function and appearance. I have re-imagined clothing from clothing banks and recycling bins as a commitment to zero waste. I also created garments from large squares of fabric that required no cutting or sewing and were hand knotted together. In the novel, Kafka describes how the character of Gregor Samsa’s vision turns monochromatic and hazy. I have expressed this through desaturated color use and manifested blurriness in textural form.
