Kaixin Zhu

This project begins with a childhood memory of eating orange-flavoured jelly and explores memory as an embodied and sensory experience rather than simply stored information. In response to an increasingly fast-paced and digitally mediated everyday life, the project considers how attention to small sensory details—touch, sound, texture and bodily interaction—can become overlooked.

Using editorial publishing as a practice-led research method, I explored how the physical qualities of a book can enable readers to perceive memory through their bodies and senses. Through iterative prototyping, graphic experimentation, material and binding tests, I developed a publication in which typography, translucent paper, layering, page-turning and reading sequence work together to reconstruct the experience of memory. Rather than simply documenting a personal memory, the book uses its material and structural qualities to turn reading into a physical and sensory experience.
