Devanath is a visual artist whose current practice expands the boundaries of image-making through an exploration of coastal landscape and the self. His work is rooted in self-investigation, using different mediums and materials. His approach challenges landscape representation and questions how an individual is shaped by the place they come from.
His upbringing influences his practice in the Malabar region of the Kerala coast in India. The vastness of the coastal landscape and the wild nature of the ocean serve as both medium and method in his work. Drawing from his lived experience within a fisherman family and coastal society, Devanath works with the textures, forms and nature of the landscape to explore the relationship between self and place.
The forms, textures and elements of the coastal landscape become part of his visual language. His practice becomes a portrait, reflecting personal experience and a deep sense of being. His choice of materials reflects the texture and feeling of the coast, communicating an internal perspective and inviting viewers into a space formed through traces of lived experience.
‘Still, Somewhere’
Still, Somewhere is an installation that continues my ongoing practice and my relationship with the coastal landscape. The work begins with thoughts around traces: what remains, what disappears, and what cannot be held in one place. Some things stay with us even when they are far away. Others slowly change until they become difficult to recognise.
The work is influenced by my experience of moving through different coastal landscapes and encountering places that appear familiar, yet never remain the same. The coast is constantly shifting. It holds, erases and rearranges what is left behind.
Within the installation, images appear as fragments. Sand, metal and other materials carry different surfaces and conditions. Marks emerge through pressure, salt and time. Some surfaces remain bright while others begin to change. Forms hold a sense of movement, of something approaching and receding.
Still, Somewhere exists between what is present and what has already begun to disappear.

‘The Silence Between’
This installation examines notions of departure, distance, memory, and return through an interplay of sculptural metal forms and voice. Drawing from the visual language, the work evokes movement, transition, and the space between places.
An accompanying audio composition, spoken in my mother tongue, takes the form of fragmented and recurring questions surrounding departure and return. Rather than offering resolution, these questions create a space of uncertainty and emotional suspension. Together, the sculptural and sonic elements explore the intangible experience of leaving, waiting, and the possibility of return.
‘Untitled’
This video installation explores themes of memory, place, movement, and displacement through a series of images of beaches and bodies of water. Water becomes a space of transition, carrying associations of distance, departure, and the passage between places. The work reflects on how landscapes can hold memories and emotions, while also suggesting the uncertainty and vulnerability that can accompany journeys away from familiar surroundings.
Drawing and Prints
These drawings explore the relationship between the inner and outer dimensions of self-expression. The forms and imagery emerge from lived experiences, memories, and emotions that often remain unspoken. Through the process of drawing, internal states are translated into visual forms, creating a space where personal experience and outward expression intersect.

‘Saakshyamaaya prakruthi’ a title from my mother tongue meaning “Nature as Witness”, explores how landscapes hold traces of time and human activity across generations. Focusing on coastal regions, I combine photographs and drawings to reflect the ocean and shore as enduring witnesses to change, memory, and shifting identities.
