Quan Yinming is a fashion and textiles designer currently studying MDes Fashion & Textiles at The Glasgow School of Art. Her practice explores the relationship between clothing, the body and emotion, using practice-based research to investigate how individual experiences can be translated into a visual and material language of dress.
Her work focuses particularly on structure, silhouette and material experimentation. Through draping, pattern cutting and digital processes, she moves between two- and three-dimensional approaches to develop garments. She sees clothing as a medium capable of carrying bodily sensations, emotional states and personal experiences, and explores the shifting relationship between the body and dress through exaggerated silhouettes, pleating, wrapping and constructed textile forms.
Drawing inspiration from personal memories, everyday experiences, and wider social and emotional themes, her practice combines material experimentation, visual research and hands-on making to create garments with a strong sense of structure and emotional expression.
METROPOLIS
Inspired by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, my collection explores the contrast between humanity and mechanisation through the two Marias.This duality is reflected in post-war womenswear, comparing Dior’s structured New Look with Balenciaga’s anti-fit sack dress.
Through draping, I combine restrictive and liberated silhouettes to create new forms. Abstract pattern shapes developed from the two Marias generates experimental structures. Grid-like windows in Metropolis inspired the use of plaid fabrics, while photographs of Glasgow’s architecture informed the colour palette. Second-hand shirts are incorporated to reduce material waste.

Inspired by Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, this collection explores the tension between humanity and mechanisation through the contrasting figures of the human and robot Maria.
The designs bring together structure and looseness, control and freedom, reflecting the opposing approaches to the female body found in post-war fashion. Through draping, deconstructed tailoring and varied-scale check fabrics, the collection reinterprets these contrasts into experimental silhouettes that explore the relationship between the body, clothing and structure.
