Hi I’m Shenghan Liu, a digital artist and game designer with a background in animation and serious games. My practice explores visual storytelling, interactive experiences and the ways in which game mechanics can communicate complex ideas through play.
During my MSc in Serious Games & Virtual Reality at The Glasgow School of Art, I developed Off Track, an experiential serious game exploring how executive function difficulties associated with ADHD can be translated into playable everyday experiences.
Off Track
Off Track is a 2D serious game that explores how executive function difficulties associated with ADHD can be translated into an interactive experience.
Through a sequence of everyday activities, players encounter visual distractions, interruptions, competing information and memory challenges while attempting to complete simple goals. Rather than explaining ADHD through text alone, the project uses gameplay mechanics to communicate experiences related to attention regulation, goal maintenance and working memory.
The game consists of four interconnected tasks situated within an everyday environment. Each task translates a different aspect of executive function difficulty into a playable mechanic, encouraging players to experience how seemingly simple activities can become difficult when attention and memory are repeatedly disrupted.
