Ziang Lin
(He/Him)
Ziang Lin (b. 2000, Changsha, Hunan, China) is currently studying for the MLitt in Contemporary Art Practice at the Glasgow School of Art.
Ziang’s practice primarily takes the form of painting and mixed-media work, influenced by Eastern mythology and folklore, anime culture, and European Surrealism. His eight years of tattooing practice have also played an important role in shaping his visual language. Rooted in traditional Old School tattooing, he has developed a personal approach to reinterpreting traditional imagery through character design and visual transformation. This experience has strengthened his understanding of imagery, line, colour, and the body, while encouraging an ongoing exploration of cultural identity and the relationship between Eastern and Western visual cultures.
Drawing from personal experiences, childhood memories, travel, collecting, and everyday observations, he transforms fragments of lived experience through imagination into characters, objects, and fictional scenes. Moving between reality and fantasy, he constructs a personal story world that explores identity, cultural memory, and contemporary society.
As his practice develops, he hopes that each work will become part of this evolving world, recording different stages of his life and thoughts while building a distinctive visual language through personal and unrepeatable acts of imagination.
REALISED
REALISED presents Ziang’s exploration through painting, mixed media, collage, and handmade processes. Drawing from fragments of travel, collecting, dreams, and everyday life, the works transform memories, images, and imagination into characters, objects, and scenes through different materials and methods.
The exhibition traces a process of transformation from lived experience to visual expression and from ideas to physical works. Repetition, change, chance, and the qualities of materials continually influence the development of each piece, allowing initial ideas to be reconsidered, adjusted, and ultimately REALISED through the process of making.
