(He/Him)
Namish Gupta is a graphic designer interested in photography, print, typography and experimental forms of visual communication. His practice often begins with observations of an environment and finding ways to translate those observations through image, material and form. His work combines research-led approaches with physical experimentation, using graphic design to question how things are documented, communicated and experienced.
Easter Eggs of the City
Easter Eggs of the City is an archive of ephemeral sticker culture in Glasgow, developed through repeated walks and photographic documentation. The project takes its name from the hidden easter eggs found in video games: details discovered by looking closely and moving through a space without necessarily knowing what you are looking for. This idea became a method for encountering the city’s stickers, as well as the basis for the pixelated golden egg stickers placed back into the urban environment. Through photography, print, typography and critical fabulations, the project questions what is preserved, what is lost, and who gets to decide what is worth documenting.
The egg is the connector of the whole project. It is used as a system within the book where the stickers are present within the egg and the Fabulations shape and form the shape of the egg. The publication runs with the Fabulations and performative typography as interruptions to challenge the archive. The larger typographic spreads use concrete poetry to openly acknowledge what each aspect of the archive can and can not do. The fabulations occurring on the other pages are directly related to the typographical spreads.
The golden egg sticker becomes the project’s own intervention, entering the same urban spaces and visual language as the stickers it records. The transition marks the point where the archive stops being only a record of the city and becomes part of the culture it documents.
