I am an interaction designer with a background in product design. I am always exploring sustainable and recycled design solutions. I am particularly interested in innovative solutions to environmental pollution. My postgraduate project focused on the problem of shellfish and crustacean food waste in rural Scotland. I am committed to finding effective design strategies and technological means of transforming these wastes into valuable resources that reduce environmental burdens and promote sustainable communities.

ShellCycle —Recycling and reusing crustacean and shellfish food waste

–Brief

Shellfish and crustacean food wastes pollute the environment and oceans due to the sheer volume of these wastes globally. Despite the fact that these wastes contain many valuable natural compounds and can be used for a variety of purposes, they are not currently utilised effectively. This project aims to promote the recycling of shellfish and crustacean food waste by design, with Scotland as the centre of research. The project focuses on reusing these wastes through composting, as they promote plant growth and improve soil health. The solution involves creating a platform that connects waste providers (seafood restaurants) with private garden users who have a need for compost, making it easy and free for users to access this waste for composting. The project will also promote proper composting methods through community outreach and raise awareness of waste recycling and reuse to reduce resource waste and environmental pollution.

ShellCycle creates good connections between seafood restaurants and users with composting needs.
This approach may be able to change the way people dispose of shellfish food waste in terms of habits.

–Purpose

To help seafood restaurants reduce the weight of their food waste and thus reduce the cost of recycling.

To help users who want to use shellfish food waste composting to obtain these nutritious composting materials in a simpler and more efficient way.

Protect the environment, reduce waste pollution, and realise the value of shellfish food waste.

Maximising the value of waste through design and innovation and raising awareness of sustainability and reuse.
